Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds – David Goggins

Bad.  Ass.  Book.  Several months ago I read Living With a Seal and was OBSESSED.  Literally sending it to everyone I thought would listen to it and not be annoyed with my excitement.  I loved the seal in the book.  Well, the seal is David Goggins.  And, let me just say….David Goggins is bad as F***.  There was no doubt in my mind I would read his new book and any book he writes in the future.  And, after I read it I was going to listen to it. Now, I have both read it and listened to it.  I will probably listen to it several more times as well.  Did I mention it’s a 13 hour listen? EEK!

Without going into David’s story.  Lets just say his life was rough.  Like, really really rough.  Yes, I know, your life is rough too at times and so is mine, at times. But, his life was rough and he became a SEAL! Say what?  You guys…he became a Navy Seal.  Just for fun, I just googled to see how many people make it through Seal training, it’s 6%.  That is a really low probability! Think about it! Get out of your head and into your life!

What is something that you have tried and failed at? Did you fail more than once? Did you go through hell week? Did you go through hell week multiple times. My guess is that very few of us fail and get back up and try again…and again…and again. Now, think of something that you have tried to do….quit after the first or maybe second time and now looking back you know you could have done it? Now think of something you have tried and quit that only 6% of people conquer. Hmmm, gives me something to marinate on.

So, what does this really mean? Mean, for you and me? It means this…you can do ANYTHING that you set your mind to.  The most important conversation we will ever have is the one that we have with ourself.  If we tell ourselves we can’t do something, guess what? We will never do it.  If we tell ourself we can do something and are fully committed, guess what? You are going to crush it!

My favorite take aways :

  1. We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training
  2. We change our clothes, we change our house, we change our cars, why don’t we change ourselves?
  3. You only have to last ONE second longer than your competition

And my favorite

4. You need to get to a place in your life, that all the things you wanted to do but didn’t, will haunt you if you don’t do them! #goals

If you are looking for a book to read to get out of your head, this is the one! David’s story was great.  He is a man who was brought into this world and not handed a blackjack, but he did the best he knew how and changed his future.  None of us have the ability to be in control of things that happen to us, but we damn well can be in control of how we respond to them!

Is there something in your life you are trying to control, but are not having success with? Try changing how you respond.  Remember, this is the ONLY thing you can control. When you change how you respond, your life will transform before your eyes. #muchlove
