Soul Surfer? I am sure you have heard of the movie, hopefully! This year I have been doing some audio books with my daughter on our way to and from school. For those of you who don’t know, my daughter is 12(yesterday), going on 27. But, this is a crucial age for kids…you know, going through the change. Trying to teach her empathy, while learning about it myself. This book couldn’t have been any better.
For those of you who have not heard of Soul Surfer – here is a quick overview. Bethany is a competitive surfer and lives in Hawaii. At age 13 she is attacked by a shark and loses an arm. And, in that moment, Bethany asked herself, “I wonder why God chose me?” WOW. Cue tears and an annoyed child on the way to school.
Is her journey over because she has lost an arm? No, but really think about that. It’s difficult to get up on your board if you aren’t balanced, if you don’t have both arms, it’s hard to pop up. If you don’t have both arms, it’s hard to paddle out. I am not a surfer, but I can think of many things that would seem near impossible – including getting over the idea of sharks swimming beneath me! Bethany is now married, with children, still competing, and still sharing her story.
How does this relate to your life? We make a commitment to something. A listing, a project, a job….whatever it might be. Something gets in the way – do we continue to pursue the goal until the answer is found. Maybe, but frequently we, or I, can run into multiple challenge and Q.U.I.T. How would your life be different if you finished everything you set out to do? How would your life, your son, your daughters life – be different if they stopped to understand other peoples stories? If they asked questions? If they understood that nothing is unattainable once you set your mind to it.? There are road blocks and detours, but that is part of the journey that God has chosen for us.
“There is no such thing as handicap, it’s only in your head.” – Bethany Hamilton
