When I ordered this book – I had no clue what to expect. Just days before picking it up to start reading, I received a message from a young man on Instagram. He asked me what got me into reading. We chatted some, I told him the next book on my list – Start with Why. He said he thought it was a perfect first book for him and we read it together. Pretty cool, right? That says so much to me. One. Reading is cooler than you think. And, two, people, besides me, are starting, or already do, to see the value in investing in themselves.
So, I start this book on Monday and finished Wednesday – of the same week. I finish the day I am headed to an important leadership meeting…remember nothing in life is coincidence. On the car ride, I spoke with Rosa, a bit about the book. Now that I think about it – this is a book I mentioned to many people in the whopping two days it took me to read. I love books like that. Books that are so amazing – that you see value in. Value that you need to share. Value that you know other people need to hear. Ok, ok, back to the leadership meeting. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I wanted to chime in while other people were talking. So many times, the book played over and over in my head. And, over and over. But, I waited patiently until it was my turn to speak. Every topic that came up for the entire day….I was able to relate to the book! And, the answer was it STARTS WITH WHY! Every. Single. Thing. Everything! Everything in your business you can filter through this.
When it was finally my turn to speak, yes finally, remember I was sitting on pins and needles. And, I tend to be a great listener, however that day, I wanted have no filter, to have …what do they call it? Word vomit. There were so many things I wanted to say, but I led with this. When you go to Apple, you go because you love Apple. You go because you connect with Apple. You believe that Apple has a superior product. And, when you go there…never once…do you, or one of the, wonderful blue shirt wearing employees ever say…well, you are welcome to go check out a Dell for half the price. Why do you think this is? Because you understand their WHY. You connect with them. You don’t care that the product is double the price of the competitor. You believe the product is better. Now, is it really better? If you think it is, then it is.
So what does that mean to us? To the rest of the world? To anyone who is in business? And, this is any business…not just real estate. To me…it means just this. We all need to spend a TON of time making sure we are representing our “brand” the way we want to. That people, who we have never met, feel like they can connect with us! That these people we have never met-understand our purpose before we even open our mouth. That we are walking our talk. Every part of our being is our brand, our WHY. And, wait for it….it’s AUTHENTIC!
Every. Single. Morning….think about this. Why did I wake up today? Why am I getting out of bed? And, why should anyone care? People do not buy what we do, they buy WHY we do it. And, and, and…one last thing…figure out your why and scream it from the mountain tops. Make sure every person you know, and don’t know, can see it, can feel it. And then, I know I said it was the last thing, but it’s not, avoid doing business with the people who are not loyal and understand your WHY. These “types” of people are the ones who do business with you based on the cost associated with it. At no point do “they” understand your WHY or VALUE.
